In many cases, these coral beads then dyed. It is a unique coloring process by which the antique / Old Dutch color is obtained. This Red Coral can be well used in the (re) making Old Dutch jewelery.
Really Red coral is quite costly. In October 2013 there was one, found in the attic !, zevenrijig Red Coral necklace sold for 7500!

Especially in regional jewelry was Red coral widely used

And already worn in the Netherlands since the 16th century. Found in inventories from the 18th century Red coral is common in both urban and rural areas. Because there was a big demand for Bloedkoraal, there is much imitated. Not to deceive, but simply to keep it affordable! Therefore imitation red coral beads were also called social beads. Funny, right? Imitation Red Coral was often worn with work clothes, because it was economical to real Bloedkoraal, which was indeed precious! Around 1860-70, the fancier has to wear garnet. Bloedkoraal hit in some parts of the Netherlands as part of a regional jewel out of fashion. Today Red Coral experiencing a real revival and it blends beautifully with both gold and silver.
