Hematite mining is one of humanity's earliest mining activities: the powdery mineral was found in graves dating back approximately 80,000 years. Hematite is a compact form of iron oxide, essentially rust! When chopped or pulverized, it therefore appears red. The name, of course, originates from the Greek: Haima, meaning blood. The streak color is also, logically, blood red. As early as the Stone Age, it was used for rock carvings and body painting. Since then, hematite has long been used as a mirror due to its high reflectivity.

And did you know that the mineral also occurs in high concentrations on the surface of Mars? This explains the characteristic orange-red color of the Red Planet. Hematite is also slightly magnetic, but not nearly as strongly as magnetite.
