Chrysocolla beads have a translucent to opaque green, blue, blue-green or brown color and a dull to glassy luster. The stripe color is light green. That is the color of the mineral that remains when it is scratched over unglazed porcelain for identification. Chrysocolla beads can sometimes be confused with Turquoise beads, but the stripe color reveals which stone it is: the Turquoise bead is pale blue-white!
Pure Chrysocolla is soft and vulnerable and therefore not really useful for making jewelry. However, far-agathized Chrysocolla is also found in Chalcedony quartz. The quartz gives it its shine and durability.
The name Chrysocolla beads is derived from the Greek words chrysos gold and kolla glue. Chrysocolla was used to solder gold.
