Howlite beads

Howlite beads were discovered near Windsor (Nova Scotia, Canada) in 1868 by Henry How (1828–1879), a Canadian chemist, geologist and mineralogist. How was warned about the unknown mineral by miners from a gypsum quarry because they saw the stone as a 'jammer'. How named the new mineral silico-boro-calcite. The name Howliet was given to it by James Dwight shortly afterwards. The most common form of howlite is a lump of stone formed by irregular nodules, sometimes resembling a cauliflower. The Crystals of Howlite beads are quite rare, they are only found in a few places worldwide.

The first Howlite crystals were reported from 'Tick Canyon', California, and later also from Iona, Nova Scotia. The Howlite crystals reach a maximum size of about 1 cm, the stones are white with fine gray or black veins in a jagged, often web-like pattern. The crystals found on Iona are colorless, white, or brown, and are often translucent or translucent.
Howlite is mostly used to decorate jewelry. Because of its porous structure, it is widely colored to imitate other minerals. This is mainly done to mimic the much more precious turquoise. It is then referred to as Turquenite.
