Real pearls are usually knotted when being used to make pearl necklaces. By securing each pearl with a knot, the pearls will not rub against eachother and as a result do not become damaged. Also, if the thread breaks, the pearls will not fall off as they are individually securely fastened with a knot! By and large, it is simply just a stunning technique when making jewellery with pearls.
Knotting Pearls on Silk Thread
Real pearls should realistically be knotted onto a fine, good quality thread. Therefore, pearl knotting is normally done with silk thread. This thread may be a tad more expensive than others, but this is due to its beauty and quality. Silk thread is available in different thicknesses. The thread thickness that you should use depends of course on the size of the bead. The silk thread must be able to fit through the hole in the bead, but it shouldn’t be too thin. If the silk thread is too thin, the pearls will slide over the knots which is the last thing you want! It would also be a shame if halfway knotting the beads you find out that your thread is too short – so always make sure that your thread is long enough before hand!
How to knot pearls
Make a knot between every pearl. Knot each pearl pretty tight against both neighboring beads. These knots create a little space between the pearls.
