Our Gold-filled Hallmark: your guarantee of authenticity

It's unfortunate to see a recent increase in counterfeit gold-filled jewelry on the market. These imitations don't do justice to the quality and durability of genuine gold-filled. This can damage public confidence in gold-filled as a high-quality material. However, at Ilona's Webgems, we strongly believe in the value of gold-filled and fully support it as a premium product. That's why we've established our own quality mark for gold-filled.

Gold filled jewelry with our quality mark

The Gold Filled Quality Mark guarantees that all our Gold Filled products meet strict quality standards and are genuine. This allows you to enjoy the beautiful pieces from our collection with peace of mind, knowing you're investing in genuine quality.

What is Gold filled?

Gold-filled is a high-quality material consisting of a metal base (often copper or brass) covered with a layer of real gold that hardly wears away because it is much thicker than, for example, gold-plated products. This creates a luxurious appearance and durability comparable to solid gold, but at a more affordable price.

Don't be fooled by imitations: choose the real thing

With our hallmark, we guarantee original gold-filled jewelry. We assure you that you'll only buy genuine gold-filled jewelry and jewelry components from us. Be wary of counterfeit products elsewhere. Our hallmark is your guarantee of quality and reliability.

We're working hard to add the hallmark to all our Gold-filled product pages. Don't hesitate if you encounter a page without the hallmark. We assure you that all our Gold-filled products are genuine.

Gold filled

Gold-filled is a high-quality product and therefore should not be compared to gold plate, gold-plated, etc. Gold-filled consists of two or three layers. The base material is copper or jeweler's brass. Over that, a layer of usually 12K or 14K gold is applied.

The benefits of gold-filled jewelry components

  • When used correctly, gold-filled chains, bracelets, or jewelry components will last a lifetime, just like pure gold jewelry.
  • Gold filled jewelry parts retain their beautiful color.
  • Gold filled jewelry components are of good and affordable quality.
  • Gold filled jewelry components are well tolerated by people who are allergic to metals other than gold.
  • Gold-filled jewelry components are easy to clean by lightly rubbing them with an untreated cloth or a mild soap solution.

-xxx- Ilona Q&A Goldfilled

What is Goldfilled?

Gold-filled is constructed of two or three layers with a base material of copper or jeweler's brass, topped with a layer of usually 12K or 14K gold. This makes Gold-filled a high-quality product and therefore should not be compared to gold plate, gold plating, etc.

Single-sided gold-plated has a single gold layer on one side. Double-sided gold-plated has a gold layer on both sides of the core material. The gold alloy is obtained by mechanically bonding the gold layer to the base metal through heat and pressure. According to the American standard, the thickness of the gold layer must constitute at least 5% of the total weight. This is much higher than with gold plate, gold plating, etc. This 5% is described by the carat of the gold alloy. Most gold-filled jewelry pieces are therefore plated with a layer of 12-karat or 14-karat gold. You can distinguish 12K or 14K gold-filled by the symbol 14/20-Gold-filled or 12/20-Gold-filled. Sometimes the terms 14K-Gold-filled or 12K-Gold-filled are also used.

Why don't we just call our Goldfilled items gold?

Some jewelry designers simply call their Goldfilled designs "gold." This is reportedly illegal. Real gold, of course, has a much higher purity. Goldfilled is a unique material and must be clearly distinguished from solid gold. At Ilona's Webgems, we have therefore categorized all our jewelry pieces containing gold into clear categories.

Is Goldfilled the same as gold plated?

No. Gold-plated jewelry components have a copper base. A minuscule layer of solid gold is applied to these components. This layer is estimated to be only 0.05% of the item's total weight. This is also why gold-plated jewelry can wear out quite quickly. It is not heat- and water-resistant, and the gold layer will gradually thin out over time. This can even cause the copper base of the item to become visible over time.

Can Gold Filled discolour?

Yes, that's possible, but only under exceptional circumstances. The relatively thick gold layer is bonded to the copper core, so you can safely assume that gold-filled jewelry will remain beautiful for a lifetime with proper care. Only in rare cases, for example, when exposed to sulfide (sulfur), can gold-filled discolor and turn black. There have been a few known cases of products sold in nail salons discoloring due to the high level of chemical fumes. As mentioned, these were extremely extreme circumstances. It's quite unlikely that gold-filled will discolor with normal use.

Why can't you cast Goldfilled charms?

Gold-filled cannot be cast. This significantly limits the types of items that can be made from Gold-filled. Casting, by definition, requires melting the metal. The result would be a large, molten mess. Therefore, Gold-filled items are made from sheet metal, tubing, or wire. Only then do you preserve the accumulated layers of gold.

Why is it better not to solder Goldfilled?

Firstly, there's no such thing as gold-filled solder. Copper solder is used for this. Secondly, we advise against soldering gold-filled jewelry without specialized equipment and specialized training. If you try to solder gold-filled jewelry with regular gold or brazing solder, you'll burn off the gold layer. A dark copper solder spot will then form. The only way to repair gold-filled jewelry is to re-plate the entire piece after repair. This is the only way to restore an even color. We also advise against sanding gold-filled jewelry. Sanding removes the gold layer from the jewelry, reducing its quality.
