What is Gold filled?

Gold filled is a high-quality material that consists of a base of metal (often copper or brass) with a layer of real gold on top that does not or hardly wear out because it is many times thicker than, for example, gold plate products. This provides a luxurious appearance and durability that is comparable to solid gold, but at a more affordable price.

-xxx- Ilona Q&A Goldfilled

What is Goldfilled?

Goldfilled is made up of two or three layers with a base material of copper or jeweler's brass with a layer of usually 12K or 14K gold on top. This makes Goldfilled a high-quality product and therefore should not be compared to gold plate, doublé, etc.

Single-sided plated Goldfilled has a single gold layer on one side. Double-sided coated Goldfilled has a gold layer on both sides of the core material. The gold alloy is obtained by mechanically bonding the gold layer to the base metal through heat and pressure. According to the American standard, the thickness of the gold layer must be at least 5% of the total weight. Much more than with gold plate, doublé, etc. This 5% is described by the carat of the gold alloy. Most Goldfilled jewelry parts are therefore coated with a layer of 12 carat or 14 carat gold. You can distinguish 12K or 14K Goldfilled by the symbol 14/20-Goldfilled or 12/20-Goldfilled. Sometimes the term 14K-Goldfilled or 12K-Goldfilled is also used.

Why don't we just call our Goldfilled items gold?

Some jewelry designers simply call their Goldfilled designs gold. This is said to be unlawful. Real gold obviously has a much higher pure gold content. Goldfilled is a unique material and must be clearly distinguished from solid gold. At Ilona's Webgems we have therefore divided all our jewelry components in which gold is processed into clear categories.

Is Goldfilled the same as gold plated?

No. Gold plated jewelry parts have a copper base. A minuscule layer of solid gold has been applied to these jewelry parts. The layer is estimated to be a maximum of 0.05% of the total weight of the item. That is also the reason why gold plated can wear out quite quickly. It is not resistant to heat and water and the gold layer will become thinner over time. As a result, even the copper base of the item can become visible over time.

Can Gold Filled discolour?

Yes, that is possible, but only under special circumstances. The fairly thick gold layer is bonded to the copper core, so you can safely assume that Gold filled jewelry will remain beautiful for a lifetime if used correctly. Only in rare cases, for example if it is exposed to sulfide (sulfur), can Gold filled discolor and turn black. There are a few known cases of products sold in nail salons discoloring due to the high level of chemical fumes. As mentioned, these were extremely extreme circumstances. It is quite unlikely that Gold filled will discolor during normal use.

Why can't you cast Goldfilled charms?

Goldfilled cannot be cast. This is a major limitation in the types of items that can be made from Goldfilled. Casting by definition requires melting the metal. The result would be a big molten mess. That is why Goldfilled items are made from sheet metal, tubing or wire. Only then do you retain the built-up layers of gold.

Why is it better not to solder Goldfilled?

First of all, there is no such thing as Goldfilled solder. For this, a copper solder is used. Secondly, we do not recommend soldering Goldfilled without special equipment and specialized training. If you try to solder Goldfilled with regular gold or hard solder, you will burn the gold layer. And a dark copper solder spot will form. The only way to repair Goldfilled items is to re-gild the entire item after repair. This is the only way to get an even color again. We also advise against sanding Goldfilled. Sanding removes the gold layer from the jewelry and it loses quality.

What can you make with GoldFilled?

The possibilities are endless! Use the materials to make your own jewelry. Goldfilled is a great base to continue making your own jewelry. Look in the webshop for inspiration.
