Agate can be found in the US, Brazil and Uruguay. But it also happens in Europe. Agate is also found in the Hunsrück (Germany) and the Auvergne (France). And occasionally even agate is found in the gravel carried by the Rhine.

Agate owes its name to the Greek river Achatès . We now know this river as the Dirillo in southern Sicily. Many Agates and other Chalcedons (group of quartz in which the crystals can only be distinguished with a microscope) were found near this river.
