Premium Gold Plated jewelry components: the smartest choice

Are you looking for gold-colored jewelry components that really look like gold, without the sky-high price of Gold Filled? Then you are not alone. With gold prices breaking record highs, many jewelry makers are looking for a smart alternative. That is why, at Ilona's Webgems, we introduced our own line: Premium Gold Plated jewelry components. In this blog, we explain exactly what that means and why it might just be the best choice for your work.

What is the difference between Gold Plated, Gold Filled, and Vermeil?

Before we explain what Premium Gold Plated is, it is helpful to compare the three most commonly used terms. There is, after all, a lot of confusion surrounding these concepts, even among experienced jewelry makers.

➢ Gold Plated means that a thin layer of gold has been applied to a base metal via an electrolytic process. At most suppliers, that base metal is a copper alloy — think of brass. The gold layer is relatively thin, which means a gold-plated part may wear off or discolor over time. This makes it an affordable but temporary option. Because the base is copper and not silver, it does not fall under the term Vermeil.

➢ Vermeil is a specific category: for this, the base of the piece of jewelry or component must consist of 925 sterling silver, with a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns on top. Silver as a base makes Vermeil naturally hypoallergenic, but also significantly more expensive than standard gold plated.

➢ Gold Filled (also known as doublé or rolled gold) is the most durable of the three gold-plated options. In this process, a thick layer of gold—at least 5% of the total weight—is mechanically bonded to the core of the component, usually made of brass, through heat and pressure. The difference from real gold is barely visible, and with proper care, gold-filled jewelry can last for decades.

Briefly summarized:

- Gold Plated → thin layer of gold on copper alloy, affordable, but wears off faster

- Vermeil → gold layer on silver, more durable but more expensive

- Gold Filled → thick gold layer, mechanically bonded, long-lasting and premium

So what makes Premium Gold Plated so different?

Standard gold-plated parts often vary enormously in quality. The color frequently deviates from what you are used to with real gold: too yellow, too pale, or with an unnatural shine. That is exactly the problem we want to solve.

The Premium Gold Plated line is a proprietary line from Ilona's Webgems, developed with the goal of achieving the right gold color we are accustomed to seeing in the Netherlands. That warm, rich gold color you know from high-quality jewelry. Not too bright, not too dull. We achieve this color because the components contain 14-karat gold. That is the same gold content used in the most popular gold jewelry on the Dutch market.

This is how Premium Gold Plated distinguishes itself on three points:

  1. Color: exactly the gold shade that Dutch jewelry makers and their customers expect
  2. Coating quality: thanks to the 14-carat gold, a richer, warmer color than standard gold-plated parts.
  3. Affordable, without compromising on material choice: furthermore, our parts contain absolutely no nickel, unlike many stainless steel jewelry components.

Nickel-free: why that is important for your customers

Nickel is one of the most common causes of contact allergy in jewelry. Many stainless steel jewelry components contain nickel, even though they may look similar to gold-plated material at first glance.

Our Premium Gold Plated components are completely nickel-free. This makes them suitable for jewelry makers who are conscious of the safety of their finished product or who serve clients with sensitive skin. For a professional jewelry maker, this is a major asset: you can offer your products as skin-friendly without reservation.

Affordable alternative to Gold Filled: smart shopping in times of high gold prices

The price of gold has now reached unprecedented heights. This price increase has a direct impact on the purchase prices of Gold Filled jewelry components, which, after all, consist of at least 5% real gold.

For jewelry makers who want to create beautiful, gold-colored jewelry without seeing their margins disappear, Premium Gold Plated components are the logical choice. You pay a fraction of the price of Gold Filled, while still incorporating the warm gold color of 14-karat gold into your jewelry.

This makes Premium Gold Plated the ideal mid-segment:

- Significantly more affordable than Gold Filled

- Higher quality than standard gold plated (due to the 14 carat gold)

- The right color for the Dutch jewelry market

- Nickel-free and therefore safe for sensitive skin

Which jewelry components are available in Premium Gold Plated?

Our Premium Gold Plated line includes all the basic components you need: clasps, jump rings, headpins, eyepins, chain links, and much more. This allows you to assemble a complete collection in a consistent gold color – from the smallest spacer to the clasp.

Because the color of all parts within the line is coordinated, you no longer have to struggle with color differences between suppliers. What you buy from us matches.

Conclusion Premium Gold Plated: premium quality, smart price

Premium gold-plated jewelry components from Ilona's WebGems offer the familiar color of 14-karat gold as we know it in the Netherlands, a high-quality, nickel-free finished product, and an affordable price. Thanks to the high-quality plating, our Premium gold-plated components remain beautiful many times longer than standard gold-plated jewelry components.

Premium Gold Plated, however, remains a plated product and is not comparable to Gold Filled in terms of lifespan. Gold Filled has a much thicker gold layer and can remain beautiful for years, or even for a lifetime. This makes Gold Filled the affordable alternative to solid gold, and Premium Gold Plated the affordable alternative to Gold Filled.
